Articles: User's Guide To SSI

So if you want to put in the extra effort and be in a position to bounce back from near disaster when the next sponsor goes belly up – as they invariably will – then read on as I teach you to write secret codes and whisper magical incantations that use a dollop of SSI, a smidgeon of text and the tail of the rarely seen but often present htaccess code. Actually there is nothing secret about it and once you have tried it you will kick yourself for never having done anything like that before. SSI stands for Server Side Includes and that is just a fancy name for a function performed by your server before the surfer sees your page. In this instance the surfer clicks a link to look at your page, the server responds by sending out the HTML code to the surfer’s computer and embedded in that HTML is a snippet of code that tells your server to add something extra into that HTML.

Neither the surfer nor any search engines see that snippet of code, all they see is the basic HTML code and the extra something your server added into that HTML code. That extra something is actually some HTML saved as a text document so if the surfer views source or a search engine spider comes along all they see is pure HTML. Now you will see that I just mentioned a text document and that really is the heart and soul of this project. This is the text file that you do just once and can use over and over again on any or all of your sites and if your sponsor vanishes in a puff of smoke all you do is change that text file and every site that it appears on will instantly be updated. What is in the text file? The HTML that makes up your ad is all that appears in that text file. To prepare your file simply build your ad as you normally would in a HTML editor, calling banners or images from where ever you normally store them, but when you go to save your work save it as a .txt file.

Once you have it saved you then upload it to whatever domain you choose. You can, if you so choose upload it to every domain you have but if you want the advantage of being able to change just one file and have it work across all your domains then only upload the text file to just one domain. Make sure that you leave that file as a .txt file even when it is on the server. I know that might sound odd to you but trust me; I’m a doctor. Well off course I’m not but in this instance I do know what I am waffling about. Ok so now you have a .txt file on one of your domains so now I hope you’re wondering what you have to do to get the SSI thing happening with that .txt file.
Well, once again it’s simple.

Bobbie Writes:
"Due to a glitch, my link list script files were corrupted. No one could figure out what was wrong with it, nor could they figure out how to fix it (aside from a full reinstall). Thanks to Dan [of MrLinkList], I was up & running again in no time at all!"
